Welcome to Magdalen Farm Strings!
Magdalen Farm Strings is a well-established annual course for promising and enthusiastic young string players aged 9 - 16, who come together for a week of music making and fun during the Easter holidays. This year the course will be held at an exciting new venue, Weycroft Hall, which is near Axminster in Devon, just a few miles from Magdalen Farm.
Weycroft Hall is run by Axminster Task Centre, a unique resource and training centre serving the local community, youth groups and the arts so it's ideally suited for a music course such as Magdalen Farm Strings. We will be based in and around the medieval manor house which boasts a splendid baronial hall with a grand piano where the end-of-course concert will be held. See task-centre.org.uk or weycrofthall.co.uk for more information.
We are very fortunate to have the distinguished composer Colin Matthews as our patron. He composes a new piece especially for Magdalen Farm Strings each year. Colin Matthews was a judge at the 2010 final of Young Musician of the Year
In 2013 we introduced chamber groups for the first time, with the aim of giving any individual participant who wished to do so a chance to demonstrate their full potential during the week. This was voted a great success by everyone and was very successfuly repeated in 2014. As a relatively small group with a family atmosphere, we are in a good position to take on board any suggestions for improvement and we introduce new aspects each year. We always have an outside visiting musician on one day during the course: jazz singer Zoe Schwarz joined us in April 2014
Several children have grown up with the course and are completely dedicated 'Magdalen Farm Stringers': but there are always plenty of new participants, who can be sure of a tremendous welcome from children and staff alike.
